The bridge to be cut

The road bridge over the railroad line Munich - Salzburg at Bernhaupten (county of Traunstein, Germany) had to be completely worn down and rebuilt for renovation.  As the train connection between those cities is a very important one for long-distance commuter service, the working times are limited: There are only very tight time slots during passage breaks for any works that may cause potential threats for trains or rail track systems.

In order to lift and remove the parts with a truck-mounted crane, the bridge had to be cut into long parts. The bridge, by the way, has 21.8 m open span and the width between the guard rails is 12 m. For cutting, preliminary cuts with 20 cm depth were necessary. To complete the cutting at the bridge with its 50 cm cutting depth, the overhead contact line at the railway line had to be switched off. As this was possible on Saturday night for two hours only, start of work was scheduled at Saturday 10.50 p.m., and the floor cutter arrived in time for their weekend task.

According to the requirements of the principal, two floor cutters for the work of cutting 40 cm deep and another two for cutting 50 cm were used; and additionally, a standby machine was required as a safety backup. These measures were necessary despite the time slot which would have been big enough, but because of the frequent delays in railway services. Trains could not be put on hold for these constructions.

The 20 cm pre-cuts were extended in two steps to 40, and then finished to 50 cm depth. On this evening, the last train had a delay of nearly one hour, making the construction supervisor very nervous. Finally, at 11.50 p.m., the work could start. The EDT EURODIMA floor cutters FS350 and FS450 were used for the pre-cutting, and the final work to the 50 cm depth was done with a FS600 and another machine.

Even if there was only one hour time slot left after the train delay, the cutting company made it easily. Thanks to using the EDT EURODIMA floor cutting blades with the high-class DURAMANT segments, the work could be accomplished within record-breaking 35 minutes! Very much for the reassurance of the construction supervisor, of course.
